How to include Mum’s in your wedding ceremony

Whether it’s the Mother of the Bride or the Mother of the Groom, these are the women who raised you, supported you, and quite possibly already have a few opinions about how the big day should unfold.

The good news is that in a celebrant-led wedding ceremony there are lots of lovely ways to involve mums. Involve them in ways make them feel truly special, without handing them the entire microphone.

So how can we include Mum in our special day?

Here are a few of my favourites.

The VIP Entrance
Some couples choose to have their mums walk in together before the ceremony begins. It gives them a special moment in the spotlight and acknowledges just how important they are in your lives.

A Reading
A poem, blessing or short passage can be a beautiful way for a mum to contribute to the ceremony. The trick is choosing something meaningful, and ideally something short enough that it doesn’t turn into a full childhood story! That could be embarrassing.

Helping with a Ceremony Ritual
Lighting a candle, joining in a handfasting, or taking part in a unity ritual are wonderful symbolic ways for mums to be involved. This is a wonderful way to be involved without the pressure of speaking in front of everyone.

A Few Words of Wisdom
For the mums who do love the microphone, this is a wonderful moment to share a few words. This can be so incredibly touching, heartfelt, funny….. but always memorable.

At the heart of it, weddings are about bringing families together. Including mums in the ceremony is a beautiful way to honour the role they’ve played in your lives and the love that has helped shape your journey to this moment.

And with Mother’s Day upon us, is there a better way to make Mum feel special on your wedding day.
